dimJust a little bit of light. It comes up 4 times, always about Pip’s light at the start.

Every other word is a common word most young learners know, like little, big, home, help, moon and star.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

  1. What can you see in the dark forest?
  2. Whose light is big? Whose light is dim?
  3. What is the moon doing? Can you glow like the moon?
  4. Why is Bun sad? What would you do?
  5. Pip’s light is dim. Can Pip still help?
  6. Can you hop like Bun? Where is the little star?
  7. Who is waiting for Bun at home? Who waits for you?
  8. How does Pip feel now? Why?
  9. Find the dim lights and help them glow.
  10. What small thing did you do today that helped someone?

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and let your child just listen and watch.
  • Second time: read along together and let your child tap any word they like.
  • Third time: switch to I can read. Your child reads, and taps a word to hear it.
  • At bedtime, turn off the light and say “Look, the moon can glow.” New words stick when they leave the book.
